More land and more space: the two main reasons this professional athlete came to Crimson. For him, more land is a mindset, and more space a way of life.

He moved from a high rise (which we loved designing for him) to a gated country club home. The house had great bones; what we did was take its dark feel, and feel create a very fresh traditional: creams, on different creams, with injections of soft grays.

Freshening up the kitchen meant lightening and brightening it. We said “goodbye” to an island of very dark wood, and said, “welcome” to fresh white paneling and light marbling on the counter and splashes. We added gold details to all the cabinet hardware: the knobs, the pulls and the faucets all have gold details…so warm and so pretty. But to know Crimson means knowing we don’t like things to be too “matchy-matchy” and so we added chandeliers, lanterns and light fixtures in polished nickel. (They also give a great open, airy feeling.)

Since the kitchen opens into the vaulted ceiling family room, we painted it in the same white as the kitchen. It lifted the whole feeling of the room and its incredible lightness of beingness brings you home. Exactly what they wanted: walk in, let go of the day… exhale.

In the dining room, we upped the drama: black grass cloth on the dining room walls are elegant, yet striking, while the rich navy blue dining room chairs provide strength and beautiful intensity.

His office request? A dark and masculine retreat from the world. Walk in and you’re immediately enveloped by the all black space’s, floor to ceiling, black paneled walls. We hung wall mounted picture lights in the built-in bookcases to shine down and spotlight books and accessories…many are metallic to reflect the light, while others are white to contract to the black. Dramatic? Yes. Handsome? Very. Finally, we wondered: Just how masculine is masculine? And when we designed the wall of built-ins with black cabinet doors, we knew our answer. Those doors? They’re humidors. The special venting system we designed? Let him smoke cigars inside without affecting the rest of the house. Dark, masculine and most of all, a retreat, a place where he can return to himself.
