Our parade of homes is continuing to quickly make progress. In any building project the framing phase of any building project always entails alot of different aspects. The footprint of the home starts taking shape and the ability to visualize the size of the rooms becomes much easier. All the mechanicals happen during this phase. Electric, plumbing, and HVAC all happen right after the home is framed.

My name is Michael Lee and I have just recently joined Crimson Design as an intern. My role here is still being defined, but for now Cheryl and Luis have asked me to introduce myself and tell the world what inspires me (in addition to general help around the office).

I graduated from The Ohio State University with my BS in Architecture, so one might wonder "why Interior Design?" Nothing in my school portfolio would say I have firm grasp on interior design. Most of my renderings have bare concrete walls; I was focused on overall form, light, and space.

One of my favorite words is "Gesamptkunstwerk", a german word which means "total work of art" - an approach to design which takes every detail into account. In architecture, it means designing the building, structure, and landscape, but also the furniture, fixtures, window treatments, wall coverings... the list goes on. My hope for my internship here at Crimson Design is to become a more well rounded designer. I would love to be an architect who specializes in residential design and I believe a grounding in interior design would be a great pathway.

When asked what inspires me, my mind is immediately drawn to the Farnsworth House (above) by Mies van der Rohe and the Villa Savoye (below) by Le Corbusier. I like clarity, straight lines, basic shapes, cold and hard materials. I love to see the direct connection between form and function and I have always been an idealist. At this point, I seem like a modernist stuck in a post-modern world, but wait there's more!

I am equally in love with art nouveau. I like the gentle curves, the effect of stained glass, the use of wrought iron. I incorrectly attach this time in art history to one of my favorite composers, Claude Debussy, but the beauty I find in Debussy's Reviere is of the same kind I find in the Victor Horta Museum (below). I often wish I could have lived during the turn of the century, preferably in France.

Not surprisingly, I also love these De Stijl tables by Eileen Gray.

As well as this Corbusian Chair

And this Miesian Bed

If I were to distill this all, my inspiration would be line patterns and intersections.

The tangerine striped pillows were an inspirational starting point for our project, Mercer Square. We loved the pop of color with the other natural earth tones in the rest of the space.

Please share your favorite tangerine moments. Whether its a sunset, favorite consumption, object, or space we would love to know what it is. Cheers to tangerine!

We chose, Pittsburgh, this year for our annual retreat. During this time we spend time brainstorming for 2012 and looking back at 2011. We enjoy changing our surroundings, getting recharged creatively, and focus on how we can become a better design firm. A highlight was visiting the Andy Warhol museum. I highly recommend making a trip to see the various works and pop art by the talented and eccentric, Warhol.

Winter Wonderland Open House

During this time of the year we are especially grateful for our relationships with you and would like to celebrate with a cup of cheer as winter begins. The weather may get frightful, but your company will be delightful! Please join us for a Winter Wonderland Open House with cocktails and small bites on December 22 from 3:00-7:00.
